Conditions at the Blue Lagoon were not great as the viz was poor, so as the song says ..."things can only get better"

Shore Dive

Anyone interested in a shore dive?

I’m planning a dive on Sunday 2nd August to allow the inexperienced divers to have a taste of the sea.

The venue will probably be Knacker hole at Beadnell (above) with a dive around high water which will be 2pm.

I had a dive there last month and there's plenty of sea life to see, not too much depth or current and its close to the car parking.

We need to get up there for about 12 noon. If the wind is in the east then Treaddur bay on Anglesey will probably be a better bet.

Another trip another rescue
Following last years rescue of a sailing yatch off the Farne Islands Selby Aquanauts were called into action again, off Millport in the Clyde to assist a fishing vessel with a rope wrapped around the propeller.

Christine, Mike and John performed the heroic deed, well they cut the rope free anyway. The grateful crew rewarded them with a bag of langoustines. Our next dive concentrated on adding a few crabs and scallops to the seafood menu. We then had a cook-in on the saturday night with a few tinnies, the seafood, some nice bread and a salad a good time was had by all.

John invented a new sport on the saturday night, AQUA-TREKKING. He donned a drysuit and tucked a cylinder under his arm and went for an underwater walk in the bay. He will be giving lessons on thursdays in the pool.

All in all an excellent weekend, the weather was good the boat and skipper are spot on, thanks to John Teevan with the Flying Eagle. Thanks also to John Carter for organising the trip and thanks to Keith,Roy, Christine, Rob, Mike and Janine for their great company.

I shall be organising a trip out of Skegness to dive some of the lesser dived wrecks of the North Sea sometime this year. Numbers limited to 6. Expected depths around 35 metres. It will be on a private boat so costs will probably be expences only. Hope it comes off as this will be something differant but it depends on the boat owner. He will hopefully be giving me some dates later.

The SAA has sent through [Friday 13th March], a new instructors tool box disc. It's the new deep stop edition. The SAA are actively promoting all instructors to incorporate the deep stop system into the relevant training lectures [e.g. DCI etc...].

Trip to Capenwray

The exercise was to perform a lift of a non responsive diver from 20m to 10m.

We had practiced in the pool and had experience from the previous rescue course we expected to have a little practice then do the deed as it were, and so it turned out, everyone managed to perform the task in one dive.

This allowed a recreational dive after lunch (sausage sandwich and a pot of tea in the cafe, very nice)for a bimble about the podsnap,watch the perch, trout and sturgeon and for some underwater graffiti.

The Participants were John H,John C, Dave, Christine, Roy, and Mark.

The water was a tad cool but the vizability was great at least 20m.

On the whole a very enjoyable day out thanks to Dave for the use of the van and for driving,look forward to the next outing.

Selby Aquanauts Pool Night

What's it like at a Selby Aquanauts Pool Night? What can I expect when I get there? Are we all weird?

Well here's some pictures of a recent pool session. It all takes place in a relaxed freindly atmosphere at a pace to suit you.

One of our members has decided to dive a twin set. A pool session is also great opportunity for already qualified divers to try out new or unfamiliar equipment in safe controlled conditions before jump ing into 40m of water in the north sea!

Farnes trip earlier this year

This is the sort of visibility we got during one of our Farnes trips this year. UK diving can be good..... honest.

Whilst on our way out to dive the Farnes, the boat we were on [William Shiels], received a call for from the coastguard.

A yacht had it's prop fouled on a rope. We answered the call and two of our members quickly donned their gear to rescue the stricken yacht. After some tugging and thrusting the prop was free. All in a days work from your local friendly SAA club.
